About Waldschmidt Guitars
Guitars and Mandolins Handbuilt by Chris Waldschmidt
In 2013 I set up my workshop in Three Rivers, CA and began building electric guitars and mandolins. I strive to build high quality instruments that excel at playability and tone.
I will often start with rough cut lumber, which is then cut and surfaced in my workshop to the desired size and thickness. This gives me a lot of design flexibility. I use a combination of power and hand tools during the build process. The bodies and necks are all hand carved to the final dimensions.
Electronics
A major contributor of the tonal characteristics of an electric guitar or electric mandolin come from the pickups and electronics.
I offer hand-wound pickups which I make in-house specifically designed for each instrument. Building and winding the pickups gives me the ability to adjust the variables to achieve the desired sound. I’m happy to install pickups from other manufacturers as well.
Once the pickups are wound and installed I do sound tests to determine the values of the other electronic components that will be used in the instrument. I do this by using a guitar electronics substitution box that I built specifically for this purpose. I recently started doing this “fine tuning” and I have found it to be a useful process.
The electronics in your guitar can be designed to meet your specific needs.
- Pickups – single coil, P90, humbucker, etc.
- Coil split, series, parallel switching.
- Individual or master volume and tone controls, or a combination.
- Various pickup selector switch configurations.
- Passive electronics, preamps, buffers, boosts.
- Modern or 50’s style tone pot wiring.
- Treble Bleed circuits.
- On Board Effects Loop (OBEL).
- Custom or specialized options…
